This can lead to splitting the expansion tank. If a coolant cap is faulty and not releasing pressure it can lead to over pressurizing the coolant system. The coolant cap, also known as the expansion tank cap or radiator cap should be changed when ever the expansion tank is replaced or a part of any cooling system overhaul. When the coolant temperature and pressure decrease coolant is returned from the expansion tank into the rest of the cooling system.
When the coolant system reaches a specific pressure threshold the coolant cap acts as a release valve, vents the excessive pressure, and draws coolant into the expansion tank.
